WikiTok and the TikTok format

WikiTok is a project I found via hn . The author mentions that he implemented it based on a X post asking for it. It’s such a simple and cool idea. I love those projects: fast and quite easy to build, they are a super simple showcase and still so many people (myself included) are overengineering things and taking forever to finish or release a first version.

HN discussed if it’s even a real tok since it has no content algorithm like the original TikTok. You could definitely enhance this small app. I tried WikiTok once and now I know I’ve got no time to read random (or personalized) wiki articles. A content algorithm wouldn’t change that. But it’s definitely a nice engineering challenge and a cool side project!

At a hackathon 3 years ago one team built a movie “TikTok style” app. Users scroll vertical and see movie trailers / scenes to select their next movie to watch. This idea won the hackathon. It once again was a PoC without any logic for personalized user content. Everybody loved it. A video content format for entertainment is much more appealing than informative text. I asked myself what content or platform can be converted to the “TikTok format” and is there any way to also convert text content into TikTok style format? Maybe LinkedIn, they already tried this with LinkedIn Videos, as it has mostly light-weight content with images? A museum’s website? Your own photo gallery?
